About Sumayya:

Sumayya was born in the Karachi, Pakistan and her early life was spent traveling the world on merchant ships. Sumayya grew up watching her mother create beauty products with kitchen counter ingredients as well as cook intuitively with spices from around the world.

Later, when Sumayya settled in Pakistan, she grew up learning to cook viscerally in the kitchen but also created her own rituals of well-being using spices and herbs inspired by her mother’s teaching as well as the wealth of folklore through her heritage.

 Sumayya is the award-winning author of two cookbooks on Pakistani cuisine and her new book is a narrative food memoir out in 2023.

 Sumayya runs her own cookery school in Glasgow and teaches people to master cooking with spices as well as offering creative food writing and cookery courses and a membership online.

 

About the event:

  •  This 2-hour workshop is exclusive to The Moon Rooms. 

  •  The event is a mixture of demonstration and talk.

  • During the evening you’ll learn about the properties of certain spices and how to make magical self-care potions, elixirs and of course, spiced chai, all the while traveling to faraway places with Sumayya’s spice stories. 

  • Learn how to use spices in the most magical of ways and discover how spices can be used for more than just cooking.

End the evening with a chance to chat with Sumayya and make new friends over a bowl of organic special seasonal daal and organic brown basmati, created by Sumayya herself. Before you part, Sumayya won’t send you home empty handed – you’ll be gifted with a small goodie bag with a print out of ritual recipes from the evening and some spices.

Ritual menu for the evening:

  •  630pm – welcome chai

  • 640pm – guests seated

  • 645-745: Demo and chat with Sumayya

  • 745pm-755pm: Comfort break

  • 755pm-830pm: Daal is served, chat with Sumayya and make friends.

  • 830pm: Farewell and take a way a goodie bag of ritual recipes and spices.
